Brave shopkeeper defies machete-wielding raiders

A SHOPKEEPER drove off armed raiders by hurling bottles at them . . . despite being knocked unconscious by one of his attackers.

Gurjit Kalkut was taken to hospital with head injuries after two raiders, one of them wielding a machete, stormed the Craggs Express store in Maltby.

One of the men pulled out an 18-inch machete and demanded money from the till, but a cashier pressed the panic button and Mr Kalkut confronted the raiders, who were both wearing crash helmets.

One of them hit him over the head and briefly knocked him unconscious, but he came round and threw glass bottles at them until they fled.

Mr Kalkut described the attackers as being in their early 20s.

Police are appealing for witnesess and asked anyone with information to contact South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020.
