A BRAVE student who defied doctors' orders to finish his education despite battling cancer has presented a £3,500 cheque to The Teenage Cancer Trust.

The beneficiaries of Wickersley School's annual sponsored walk were picked by friends of straight A pupil Alexander Albiston (18).

He was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer at the beginning of Year 12, but fought through to gain five top grades in chemistry, biology, Spanish, maths and general studies.

But the day before he was to set off for university, Alexander heard that his cancer was returning.

He is now undergoing more chemotherapy while Cambridge holds his place to study Spanish and Russian open.

Jennifer Callaghan, assistant to the director of sixth form, said: "Alex has become an ambassador for having an excellent spirit in the face of tough challenges but, due to his altruistic attitude, he wanted to make sure that teenagers like him has access to units in NHS hospitals specifically for teenagers with cancer.

"All sixth formers have pulled together and raised £3,500. People are still donating and we hope that they will still continue to give.

"The money will be going towards the new cancer unit at the Sheffield Hallamshire hospital where it will be used to help to ease patients' treatment."

Alexander, of Green Lane, Wickersley, presented the cheque to TCT regional manager Heather Bowen on behalf of the Bawtry Road school.
