Bin that gum or face a fine, warning

Rotherham Borough Council is one of 12 local authorities which have signed up to a crackdown co-ordinated by the Chewing Gum Action Group.

Over the next few weeks, the council will run CGAG’s advertising across a selection of roadside banners, bus stops, lamp posts and telelphone kiosks.

The adverts will remind local people to bin their gum or risk a fine of up to £80.

Figures have shown that councils involved with the CGAG advertising programme see their gum litter reduced by an average of 43 per cent, with some authorities reporting even greater levels of gum litter reduction.

The council’s Cabinet member for waste and emergency planning, Cllr Richard Russell, said: “Chewing gum litter is a significant problem in Rotherham’s streets and public spaces.

“We have partnered with the action group to raise awareness of the issue and encourage local residents to take action.”
