Bin it or pay up ultimatum in litter war

LITTERBUGS have been warned to use the bin or face the courts after another six successful prosecutions by Rotherham Borough Council.

Rotherham Magistrates handed out fines and charges totalling nearly £1,700 in a single day following prosecutions by the authority for littering.

Among those fined were Donna Lewis, of Red Hill Avenue, Barnsley, Becky Meggitt of Rawmarsh Hill, Parkgate, and Adam Burgin of South Vale Drive, Thrybergh, who were each found guilty in their absence of littering and fined £175 with £180 costs.

Ben West, of Preston Road, Rainworth, who was also found guilty in his absence, was ordered to pay a £105 fine and £180 costs.

Diana Deveaux of Gloucester Road, Kimberworth Park, was fined £35 and ordered to pay £25 costs and Daniella Moskwa of Eastfield Place, Rawmarsh, was fined £80 and £180 costs, after both pleaded guilty by letter.

Cllr Richard Russell, the council’s Cabinet member for waste and emergency planning, said: “These successful prosecutions send out a strong message to litterers that these type of offences will not be tolerated in Rotherham, and that if they choose not to pay their fine they may end up with a heavier penalty at the Magistrates’ Court.”
