Bikers praised for road rescue

TWO bikers who took a training course at a Dearne area fire station used their newly-learned skills just weeks later in helping a stricken cyclist.

Brian Newbold and Bill Peacock, attended the BikerDown course run at Edlington Fire Station earlier this year by Safer Roads Partnership officers, which taught them how to respond on coming across other road users after an accident.

And the pair left into action after a collision on a country road near York, involving a car and cyclist.

Using their training, they made sure that the casualty was stable and in a safe place off the road, then controlled the traffic flow to ensure a quick access for the ambulance.

The BikerDown course is a free, two-hour course, educating bikers on how to deal with an incident on the roads when they are first on the scene.

Bill said: “Had it not been for the training we had recently received courtesy of the BikerDown programme, I would have been clueless in how to react in this situation.

“The training we received on that evening undoubtedly helped all concerned manage a difficult incident with confidence.”

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue station manager Darren Perrott said: “Brian and Bill's experience proves that training sessions like this really do work. “They give people the confidence and knowledge of what actions to take at the scene of a serious incident — skills that can ultimately prove life-saving.”
