Awards joy for top Rotherham businesses

THE team behind Rotherham’s first free-running centre were jumping for joy this week after landing a top business award.

Team Katalyst of Parkgate took the Business Community Impact Award at the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards on Friday, just five months after expanding from providing dance and gymnastic classes to offering visitors young and old the chance to try out the French sport of “parkour” by climbing, jumping and hurling themselves into a giant pit of foam.

Founded by martial artist and parkour fan Richard Codd and dance teacher Liam Fairest, the centre was launched as “a safe space where young people could learn parkour, but in an environment as realistic as possible”.

There was plenty of delight in the Dearne, as Oracle Precision Engineering of Manvers won the Manufacturing Excellence Award and near neighbours Gala Tent took the Digital and Creative Award.

Rotherham runaways charity SAFE@LAST was also recognised, taking the Charity of the Year Award and £3,000 in prize money to fund its work.

Barnsley-based engineering and building contractors Palmer Construction took the top prize at this year’s awards, picking up the Roy Hatfield Business of the Year trophy in front of 500 guests at the Barnsley Metrodome.

The firm’s director Simon Dennis was named Business Person of the Year Award.

Chamber of Commerce chief executive, Andrew Denniff said: “It was once again a superb evening, reflecting all that is best in South Yorkshire business.

“My congratulations go to all our winners and especially Simon Dennis and everyone at Palmer Construction.

“All our nominated entrants can congratulate themselves in contributing to another successful event at the Metrodome.”
