Arson theory over disused fire station blaze

FIREFIGHTERS spent Saturday night battling a blaze at the former Mexborough fire station.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were alerted to the incident shortly after 2am and were on the scene within minutes.

The fire was contained to the first floor of the building in Highwoods Road.

Around 25 firefighters from Dearne, Rotherham and Edlington fire stations used jets, hose reels and a ladder to bring the fire under control.

The last crew left the scene at 6.33am.

The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.
