Ambulance boss’s Christmas plea

THE HEAD of Yorkshire’s ambulance service is urging revellers to “choose well” this Christmas and spare a thought for medical staff working through the holiday.

An open letter from chief executive David Whiting wishes everyone a healthy and happy Christmas, asking all to ease the burden on emergency services by looking after themselves and only dialling 999 in a genuine emergency.

Mr Whiting writes: “As a vital emergency service that provides life-saving care and treatment to members of the public all year round, December 25 will be like any other normal day for many of our staff.

“[They] will be kept extremely busy responding to everything from heart attacks and strokes to alcohol-related illnesses and injuries, and providing advice on common ailments such as indigestion and headaches.

“The Trust is urging people to select the most appropriate service for their healthcare needs.

“This includes self-care, pharmacists, GP surgeries and urgent care centres across the region.”

The ambulance boss advises everyone to stock up on first aid supplies for minor injuries, keep medication close at hand and drink responsibly.

NHS staff will man the 111 health advice service throughout the Christmas period, offering help to those who have an urgent healthcare need.

Mr Walker adds: “Do spare a thought for our dedicated staff who will be working instead of celebrating over Christmas and only dial 999 in a genuine medical emergency to ensure that our ambulances are available for those who need them most.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff working over the festive period for their continued dedication, commitment and professionalism during what will be a busy time.

“It is, as always, very much appreciated by the Trust and, more importantly, our patients.”
