All roads lead to Rotherham for Slovenian highway engineers

ROAD engineers from Eastern Europe have been on a fact-finding mission to a Rotherham firm

SteelPhalt, in Sheffield Road, Rotherham, has been developing high-performance ashpalt products for the UK road making industry since the 1960s.

The company sources slag from the local steel-making industry to make sustainable asphalt that is 95% recycled and which is used to make durable roads.

A delegation from Slovenia toured the plant and explored the full range of SteelPhalt products, as well as meeting local authority specialists from Rotherham Borough Council, which has been using the products on roads throughout South Yorkshire for over 70 years.

Now the company hopes the visit could lead to more business in a new market.

"We already have operations in the Slovenian steel industry through our parent company Harsco," said SteelPhalt commercial manager Dean Raynor.

"What they do not have there at the moment, though, is the technology that could help them successfully develop asphalt from steel slag aggregates

"This meeting could prove extremely important if it leads to us developing SteelPhalt technology for this new and developing market."

The exceptional strength and durability of SteelPhalt's steel slag products extends the life of roads and lengthens road maintenance intervals for resurfacing.

It achieves high skid resistance - enhancing road safety for both drivers and pedestrians - and maintains it throughout the whole life of the road, also avoiding the use of quarried materials and the landfill of residual slag product.

The company's products include SteelStop, SteelSurf, SteelPave and SteelFlow.
