Action pledge over Maltby 'eyesore'

RESIDENTS who described a patch of council-owned land as a “disgusting eyesore” have been promised that the area will be tidied up.

Home owners living close to the overgrown area on Highfield Park at Maltby claim it has been neglected by Rotherham Borough Council for at least five years.

They say that the hedges which border neighbouring properties are forcing fences down and encroaching onto private land.

Donna Podmore, whose mother lives close to the area, said action was long overdue.

“The council is quick to fine people who don’t keep their gardens tidy but then they can’t even keep their own in order.

“It’s pulled all my mum’s fence down, it’s all overgrown and has become a place for anti-social behaviour.

“It’s been a problem for at least five or six years and I’ve tried to contact councillors and the borough council but nothing has ever been done.

People keep saying it’s going to get sorted but it never does and in the meantime we are left to deal with the mess. It’s just not fair.”

A spokeswoman for Rotherham Borough Council said that there were plans to resolve the issue long-term but did not give any further details.

She added: “In the meantime the site will be cut and tidied up.”
