NEARLY one in three Rotherham adults is a hazardous, harmful or dependant drinker, shock health figures indicate.

More than 5,100 are thought to be physically or psychologically reliant on booze—with just one in ten seeking treatment.

The figures—based on National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence estimates—have prompted health bosses to step up efforts to reduce Rotherham’s drink problem.

Women are advised not to regularly drink more than two to three units.

One glass of white wine or a pint of lager equates to approximately two units.

Hazardous drinking is when the weekly alcohol unit limit is exceeded, as in the case of about 47,600 of 197,000 Rotherham adults.

The harmful category is when related health problems like depression, pancreatitis or alcohol-related mishaps occur, thought to affect 7,475 adults.

Dependency means a drinker feels unable to function without alcohol, which becomes an important—sometimes the most important—factor in their life.
