£77m Manvers waste plans unveiled

PLANS for a new multi-million pound waste plant which will handle all of Rotherham’s rubbish have been submitted to Rotherham Borough Council.

The proposals are for a facility on Bolton Road, Manvers, and have been finalised followed a programme of consultation.

The site would handle “black bin” rubbish from homes across Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley and the proposal has been put forward by 3SE—a partnership between Shanks and Scottish and Southern Energy.

The project—which is expected to create 40 new jobs—has been supported by more than £77 million of private finance initiative funding.

The 24-hour facility would be built on a former colliery site owned by Rotherham Council and would consist of two plants expected to treat up to 265,000 tonnes of household waste.

The application will be scrutinised by a number of organisations including Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster Councils before it is considered by Rotherham’s planning committee next year.
