700 jobs will be created by £50 million Waverley leisure and retail project, plans reveal

A £50 MILLION leisure and retail area will provide a “missing ingredient” in the growing Waverley community — and create 700 jobs, plans say.

An application has been submitted to Rotherham Borough Council for the 12-acre project, which includes a town square, bus station and hotel.

Shops, a gym, health centre, pharmacy, offices and parking for 577 cars are also in the proposals from Waverley Square Ltd.

A supporting document from the firm said the project would substantially improve the visual character of the spot, between the housing estate and the Advanced Manufacturing Park.

It added: “Waverley enjoys a good community spirit at present and this development will provide the missing ingredient that the area needs.

“Full and part-time jobs will be provided, in addition to the jobs associated with the construction and multiplier effects through the rest of the local economy.

“This will in itself bring greater prosperity to the area, as most staff are likely to be recruited from the immediate locality.

“We therefore consider the proposed design will create a sense of place and a focal point for the centre in addition to the obvious benefits of regeneration.”

About 600 houses have been completed at Waverley and another 3,400 are set to be added over the next 15 years.

The Harworth Group, which owns the land, is working with Dransfield Properties on the retail and leisure project.

Dransfield opened shopping centre Fox Valley in Sheffield last summer and has won awards for its Marshall’s Yard scheme in Gainsborough.

Public consultation on the plan closes on June 2.
