504 Rotherham youngsters given mental health help

MORE than 500 Rotherham schoolchildren have been referred for mental health support in the past 12 months, a new report has revealed.

The current contract for Rotherham Mind to deliver the service was awarded in 2009 and will expire on March 31.

Rotherham Borough Council has agreed £23,750 funding to cover the three months until a major shake-up of funding pots in the summer.

A council spokesman said: “The mental health support in schools service is well-established and performing well with a continued demand for the service.

“There are currently 12 secondary, 14 primary and one special school receiving the service.

“Since last April, 504 children and young people have been referred to the service. The majority of these referrals are from schools.

“It is therefore appropriate for this service to be recommissioned.”
