£5,000 grant keeps radio hams on the air

MEMBERS of a radio society are celebrating after winning a grant which will help to secure the group’s future.

Mexborough and District Amateur Radio Society has been presented with £5,000 from The Coalfield Regeneration Trust.

The organisation has been up and running for almost 47 years and members are delighted by the funding which will pay for rent, training and equipment.

Secretary Sharon Saiger said: “This funding will ensure the continued operation of the society and hopefully encourage people to participate in the hobby.

“It will also help people to gain a qualification in radio communications and members of the public will benefit from the knowledge and skills of trained radio operators in obtaining their qualifications.

“We are also now in a better position to include those who are disadvantaged
in some way and we are hoping to encourage young people to develop a new activity.”

The society meets at The Place, Castle Street, Conisborough, on Friday evenings from 7pm until 10pm.
