Among the casualties rushed to hospital were two men in their 40s suffering from head and spinal injuries, and a 19-year-old girl with whiplash injuries.

A horsebox was also among the vehicles involved.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “Although we did not have to cut anyone from their vehicles this was a major incident due to the number of vehicles involved and the number of casualties that resulted.

“The M18 was closed for a significant amount of time following the incident, causing significant disruption.”
