Tributes paid to Wombwell councillor Denise Wilde

TRIBUTES have been paid to a “marvellous Yorkshire woman” who fought hard for the people of Wombwell.

Cllr Denise Wilde passed away in Barnsley Hospice at the age of 69 after battling a long illness.

The Wombwell councillor was a Labour member on Barnsley Council since 2003 and her death has prompted a series of loving tributes.

Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher said: “Denise was a lovely woman. She was a real fighter for people in Wombwell and for Barnsley.

“She was also a marvellous Yorkshire woman who had real grit and determination, she never suffered fools and she possessed a wonderful sense of humour.

“Her deep and proud commitment to public service and to social justice was a defining characteristic of her long years in the Labour Party and in Barnsley.”

He added: “We have lost one of our own and my heartfelt condolences go out to Raymond and all her family and friends, and in particular to her grandchildren”.

Cllr Steve Houghton, Barnsley Council leader, added: “Denise was a highly involved member of the council, particularly in housing.

“She was a strong and dedicated advocate for Wombwell and my thoughts and prayers are with her family.”
