Train passenger racially abused

A MAN was racially abused on a train travelling between Chapeltown and Wombwell.

The incident happened on July 23 at around 11pm on the 10.41pm Northern Train service from Sheffield to Huddersfield.

British Transport Police said the train was packed with people travelling back from the Tramlines Festival in Sheffield.

Investigating officer PC Ewan Brechin said: “A man and woman on the service were seen to make extremely offensive racist gestures towards a young black man travelling on the same service.”

The man is described as around 6ft tall, of stocky build with receding short, greying, ginger hair. He was sunburnt and wearing a short-sleeved shirt.

The woman was white, aged around 50, approximately 5ft 7ins tall with a tanned complexion and shoulder length white blonde hair. She was wearing a dress at the time of the incident.

PC Brechin said: “Everyone has the right to use the rail network with fear of abuse, intimidation or violence.”
