Pc Steven Jacques, of BTP, said: “A passenger alerted the driver after they saw the stone smash through the train window and land in the vestibule area.

“Luckily no one was injured, but this could have been very serious.

“This sort of behaviour is extremely dangerous and this offence could have easily resulted in a passenger being seriously injured, not just the considerable damage to the train, which as a result had to be taken out or service to be fixed.

“Those responsible are not only risking serious injury to passengers and staff, they are also risking an appearance in court and a criminal conviction.

Pc Jacques added: “I would urge anyone who knows anything about this incident or think they might know those involved to contact police as a matter of urgency.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have information that can assist the investigation is asked to contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident 613 of September 14, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
