Rotherham station celebrates awards arrival

ROTHERHAM Central has been recognised among Britain’s top railway stations at a national industry awards ceremony.

The transport hub received a prize for Station Excellence at the Rail Business Awards, held last month.

Judges commended Central’s £10.4 million makeover in 2012, improving comfort and accessibility for half a million passengers each year.

Led by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and part-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, the refurbishment added a waiting room and passenger lifts.

SYPTE, Northern Rail and Rotherham Borough Council released a joint statement celebrating their big win.

It said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious award in recognition of the significant improvements made to Rotherham Central station.

“The new station provides an attractive gateway to Rotherham, encouraging a boost to economic growth and providing a significantly enhanced experience for customers travelling to and from the town.

“This achievement is testament to the dedication of staff and partners involved in the project.”
