Northern Trains updates station announcements in Dearne Valley following public appeal for accurate pronunciations

KEEP your ears peeled if you catch the train in the Dearne Valley - you might hear a few changes to the on-board messages.

Northern has re-recorded the names of 34 of the stations across its network following a public appeal “to ensure local pronunciation was respected”.

Three of them are in and around the Dearne, with Wombwell, Thurnscoe, Wombwell, Elsecar, Barnsley and Doncaster all given the new treatment.

Northern said it had received dozens of requests to change names including several relating to the Cumbrian town of Aspatria.

Northern employees Pete Corley and Laura Palmer did the honours, having earlier appealed to customers to get in touch if they had mispronounced any of the more than 500 stations on Northern’s network.

Northern chief operating officer Tricia Williams said: “This has been such an interesting process.

“Some stations are pronounced very differently to how they appear in writing – it’s important to get these things right.”
