Council buys up car park

WESTGATE car park has been made free to use after being bought by Rotherham Council — but only for two weeks.

The facility, next to the Cutlers’ pub, will close after January 3 to allow for “small scale improvements”, RMBC says.

But longer-term plans for the newly-acquired site have yet to be revealed.

Simon Moss, the council’s assistant director for planning, regeneration and transport, said: “We can confirm that the council has successfully acquired both the Westgate car park and other properties along Westgate/Sheffield Rd which were previously owned by one private sector investor.

“These acquisitions were facilitated using a combination of Town Deal and Levelling Up Funds. We will be able to say more about future plans for the sites in due course.

“The car park will close for a short period in early January while small scale improvements take place. Between December 20 and January 3, the car park will be free to use.”
