Time to Remember in Rotherham — almost!

FUNDRAISERS say it is not quite Time to Remember, as drainage problems delay plans to put up a war memorial.

The Friends of Clifton Park collected £30,000 from Advertiser readers to fund a World War Two monument.

Now they say extra ground preparation needs doing before stone masons can start work — at an additional expense of around £2,500.

The group is asking for more public donations to help cover the extra cost and get their plans off the drawing board.

Elaine Humphries, the group’s chairman, said: “We don’t want this thing falling over — we want it to be there forever, so it has to be done properly.

“We had a meeting with Rotherham Borough Council on Wednesday and hopefully contractors are going to start work next Tuesday.

“We will find the money one way or another, but it would be enormously helpful if readers would contribute.”

The extra works mean that organisers still cannot set a date for the monument’s unveiling, but Elaine is confident that it will be this year.

“There’s still plenty of work to be done,” she said, “ but it will get done so watch this space.”

Donations can be left in an envelope at Garden House in Clifton Park, next to Clifton Park Museum.
