Time capsule hidden in battlements at restored Rotherham landmark

THE MAYOR of Rotherham had a topping time as he took part in a ceremony to mark the final stages of the £1.2 million restoration of Boston Castle.

Cllr Shaun Wright stood on the roof of the Grade II Listed building, off Moorgate, to carry out an official topping out ceremony as the finishing touches were made to the 18th century hunting lodge this afternoon.

While on the roof the Mayor placed a sealed time capsule into the reinstated battlements.

The capsule contained artefacts and information about Boston Castle and the £1.2 million restoration project that began last August.

The work was made possible thanks to £590,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and an additional sum from Rotherham Borough Council.

It has seen the removal of the Victorian extension and the building of a new entrance foyer, a platform lift, stairs, toilets, storage and plant rooms.

Around £50,000 of funding was secured by the Friends of Boston Castle specifically for work to the exterior courtyard area.

This is being transformed into an amphitheatre, providing an attractive events space for a wide range of local groups and schools.
