Three escape in Rotherham fire drama

THREE people escaped unharmed from a house fire after a neighbour spotted flames and called 999.

Firefighters said there were no smoke alarms inside the Broom Terrace property, Wellgate, and the family of two women and one man were lucky not to be hurt.

Crews from Rotherham and Darnall were called at about 1.50am on Thursday. They cleared the smoke from the home after putting out the blaze.

The blaze was started after a hob was left on, causing a pan to catch fire.

As it spread through the kitchen, glass in the windows and doors shattered because of the heat.

A fire service spokesman said: “This family was very lucky not to be hurt in this fire.

“We will be returning to the house this morning to carry out a home safety check and fit free smoke alarms.

“Smoke alarms save lives by giving people vital extra seconds to escape the toxic smoke caused by fires.”
