There is a light that can’t get out

A STREETLIGHT was labelled “pointless” after being erected in a spot where the beam is shrouded by a tree.

The lamp-post was put up on Worrygoose Lane in Whiston — and was actually placed on the wrong side of the road, the Advertiser has discovered.

“Being enclosed within the canopy, it serves no useful purpose,” said Whiston resident Allen Cowles. “The light does not shine down onto the pavement.

“When the chap who erected the light was asked if he would be cutting back the tree, his response no, as it was not his job, despite the fact that he had the lift equipment used to install the light.

“This is typical of RMBC and the public sector. We have spent taxpayers’ money on a new lamp-post installation and it is pointless.

“The point is if it is not dealt with now it will be in the same state next summer. This is standard RMBC practice — they don’t care about residents and taxpayers.”

A Rotherham Council spokesperson said: “The replacement lamp-post on Woorygoose Lane was installed by an external contractor.

“The intended location for this new lamp-post was on the opposite side of Worrygoose Lane.

“The contractor is arranging for the streetlight to be moved to the correct location at no additional cost to the council taxpayer within the next two weeks.”
