Tata's Rotherham research centre 'safe'

RUMOURS of Tata Steel closing Rotherham’s world-leading Swinden Technology Centre have been squashed by industry sources.

A national Sunday newspaper reported that the Indian-owned steelmaker had warned the government that it intends to close two technology centres, in Rotherham and on Teeside, over the next 18 months.

The paper’s Westminster source said research would be moved to the Netherlands and India.

Tata said it did not comment on “speculation and rumour” but steel insiders refuted the claims made in the report.

The centre, on Moorgate, is the main research and development site in the UK, employing around 200 staff.
