Steelworks site set for £10million sale

A FORMER steelworks site covering 50 acres of industrial land on the Rotherham-Sheffield border is to be sold for £10 million.

Three preferred bidders have emerged as Outokumpu look to sell-off the area which lies beside the M1, adjacent to Meadowhall and the forthcoming IKEA furniture store.

Thousands of people were once employed in the buildings which occupied the site, prior to their demolition in 2011.

The Outokumpu site initially developed by the British Steel Corporation for the cold rolling and cutting of stainless steel into sheets of metal back in the 1950s.

Following privatisation in the 1980s it became British Steel Stainless and was sold to Swedish company Avesta in 1992.

Outokumpu bought the operation in 2002 —after initially buying shares in Avesta — but operations were later wound down and the site was eventually closed in 2005.
