Sports celebration ahead of Olympic torch visit

Swinton Sport and Health Group, officers from Rotherham Borough Council and members of the town’s football clubs are combining their powers to host a Community Gala Day on June 23.

The event is set to make the most of Swinton’s rich sporting past as residents gear up for the Olympic torch passing through Rotherham three days later.

Swinton councillor Ken Wyatt, who is part of the organising committee, said: “There has not been a gala in Swinton since 2006 although there had been a long tradition before that.

“It will be great to see the community come together to celebrate not only the Olympics but its own sporting and cultural heritage.

“The event will cater for young and old, boys and girls, men and women and will hopefully mark the inauguration of an annual event that Swinton and Rotherham can be proud of.”

Swinton Park Road Welfare Grounds will host the activities which kick-off at 10am with a football training session for six to 11-year-olds.

Adults will be able to test their skills with a five-a-side football competition at 1pm.

Organisations including charities and businesses will hold their own stalls in a marquee provided by Gala Tent Limited.

Fun and games will continue throughout the afternoon with the council’s sports development team offering Olympic-style challenges for all the family as well as giant garden games including Jenga, skittles and dominoes.

Rotherham United Football Club and Community Trust will provide signed memorabilia to be won on the day.

There will also be a bouncy castle, refreshments, demonstrations from the fire service, offers from Swinton businesses and a special classic car showcase.

Parking will be available at Swinton Community School.

Any funds raised will be used to support more sporting and community-based activity in Swinton over the coming years.

Cllr Wyatt added: “A lot of hard work has gone into putting the event together.

“Let’s hope we have a great day in this special year; the event will have a strong sporting theme but will also have something for everyone.”
