Sister’s murder appeal 50 years on

Irene Hall (68) said she believed “somebody does know” what happened to her sister Ann Dunwell, who was was sexually assaulted, strangled and left naked at the foot of a manure heap in Maltby on May 6, 1964

The killer has never been found and the police enquiry remains South Yorkshire’s oldest unsolved “cold case”.

Mrs Hall said: “You learn to live with the pain and heartache but it never goes away.

“I appeal to those who, for their own reasons, have kept information to themselves for so long.

“It is possible that the person responsible may now be dead but did they admit what they had done?

“My father always wanted to know who could do such a thing before he passed away, but he never got to know.

“I’d like to see the killer brought to justice too, but I'm not getting any younger. “If I don't then the burden will fall to my children.

“Each and every day, I think about Anne and ask the question: ‘What did happen on that terrible night?’ But somebody does know.”

Anne was on her way home from Bramley to Whiston when she went missing. Her body was found the following day and a postmortem examination revealed she had been strangled with her own stockings.

Det Supt Richard Fewkes said several new lines of inquiry had been identified over the years and the murder “should never be forgotten”.

He appealed for anyone who could help the enquiry to call police on 101.
