Council leader Chris Read and MPs Sarah Champion and John Healey were all stunned after Tata confirmed today that up to half its 1,200 Rotherham employees could be axed as it restructures its business.

Cllr Read said the news was “a huge blow to the workers, their families and the borough in general”, adding: “Clearly this is a very difficult time for the workers and their families at Tata Steel and our thoughts are with them.

“I have spoken to staff at the council today and we will do all we can to work with the company and other partners to assist and to co-ordinate a partnership response to the job losses in an effort to keep people in employment and support those who may have to move on.”

Ms Champion said the announcement was “devastating” and Mr Healey called it “the worst possible news”.

Tata said the Rotherham-based bar business had been underperforming in the face of imported steel and electricity costs double those of european rivals.

Mark Broxholme, managing director of Tata’s speciality and bar business, said: “We have to recognise that economic circumstances continue to undermine the work Tata Steel has done to build a sustainable business here.”

Roy Rickhuss, general secretary of the biggest steel union Community said it was “devastating news” and also called for government help to combat energy costs.
