School friends pay tribute to ‘superstar’ Yusuf

SCHOOL children and teachers paid tribute to a “superstar” five-year-old pupil by dressing up in his favourite superhero costumes and raising £1,000 with a charity fun run in his memory.

Yusuf Mahmud Nazir’s family had sought treatment for a severe throat infection a week before he died — after Rotherham Hospital said it had “not got the doctors and not got the beds”.

The Masbrough school boy, who was described by his head teacher as “a superstar”, died on November 23.

Last week Yusuf’s family announced they had instructed a legal team to act on their behalf in their “fight for justice” after an investigation was launched.

His uncle, Zaheer Ahmed, said Thornhill Primary —had organised an “amazing day” in tribute to the youngster.

“They all dressed in Yusuf’s favourite colour blue and teachers dressed in his favourite superhero costumes,” he said.

“They raised over £1,000 for charity and a school bench in his memory.

“Yusuf’s parents also attended the day — it was very, very much appreciated from all the family.”

Head teacher Karen Hill said: “We did a run to remember Yusuf as he loved running. It was around the school grounds and led by his brother.

“Staff and children were asked to dress in blue or come as one of his favourite characters which were Peter Rabbit, Spiderman or from his favourite show Paw Patrol. Some staff, as well as children, were Spiderman, others were Peter Rabbit or dressed in blue.

“I had rabbit ears and ran with a stuffed Chase (Paw Patrol character). His mum and dad came to watch.

“Children and staff made donations and we have raised over £1,000.

“It will be used to buy a memory bench, sponsor a child in Pakistan and build a water well in Pakistan.”

The school is hoping to make the sponsored run an annual event to remember Yusuf, she added.
