Scarecrow stars feature in straw-some Swinton festival

STARS of the stage and screen were recreated in scarecrow form at a village festival.

The event took place at St Margaret’s Church from Friday until Sunday with the theme of film and TV characters and prizes were awarded for the best entries in various categories.

Crocodile Dundee and Worzel Gummidge jostled for position alongside Compo and Bill and Ben.

A traditional town fair was held on the vicarage field on Saturday afternoon and a barn dance with live band on the Friday evening.

Carolyn Brading, wife of curate Fr Chris Brading, described the event as a great success.

She added: “It was brilliant and we were overwhelmed by the number of entries.

“Overall we had 50 scarecrows and hundreds of people.

“It was so popular we are already thinking about making it an annual event.”
