Safety drive targets Rotherham's disabled scooter users

ROAD safety classes are being launched for mobility scooter riders after a string of accidents involving the vehicles on South Yorkshre roads.

The South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership and Parkgate Mobility have teamed up to deliver a series of free mobility scooter safety sessions at Hellaby’s Lifewise Centre.

Figures show that in the last five years, across South Yorkshire, there were 28 incidents involving mobility scooters and in 17 of those incidents people were either killed or injured as a result.

The Scooter Safe sessions have been developed to teach mobility scooter users about the legal requirements of owning and using a scooter and the skills required to drive the machine safely.

The course will involve a mixture of theory-based and hands-on sessions with attendees using a variety of mobility scooters, or their own machines, to navigate their way around a series of obstacle courses and day-to-day situations.

Dates for the Scooter Safe sessions have not yet been set but anyone interested in taking part should contact South Yorkshire Police on 01709 832455 or email [email protected]
