Rotherham's churches reveal secrets of their past

ROTHERHAM’S rich religious history comes alive this weekend thanks to the annual Heritage Open Day.

Members of the public are being invited to see the history on their doorstep by visiting both Rotherham Minster and the town's rare Bridge Chapel on Saturday when they can take guided tours and hear about the heritage of both buildings.

Rotherham Minster, acknowledged as one of the country's best perpendicular churches, will be open from 10am until 4pm.

Various displays will be staged around the building and guided tours will take place between 11.30am and 12.30pm and 2pm and 3pm.

The choir from Canklow Woods Primary School will perform at 10.30am while drummers from Broom Valley Community School will perform at 3pm.

From the Minster, visitors can then walk the short distance to the Chapel on the Bridge, which will be open to visitors from 10.30am until 4pm.

The Vicar of Rotherham, the Rev Canon David Bliss, said: “I hope everyone takes the opportunity to come and visit these buildings, which are so important to Rotherham town centre."
