Rotherham steel destined for Tata's new Chinese aerospace plant

STEEL giant Tata is expanding its aerospace operations in China.

The company, which last week announced that 110 jobs would be axed at the Thrybergh Bar Mill, has opened a new plant in the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi province 600 miles south west of Beijing.

It will process steel made at the Speciality Steels business in Aldwarke, Rotherham, for aerospace manufacturers.

Tata already operates an aerospace service centre in Suzhou.

Mark Broxholme, managing director of Tata Steel’s speciality steels business, said: “Following on from the development of our successful operation in Suzhou, this facility not only allows us to continue to serve our existing customer base as they develop and grow in Xi'an, but also allows us to forge new relationships with the expanding Chinese-owned aerospace manufacturing base.”
