Rotherham social worker 'failed to keep case notes,' hearing told

A MISCONDUCT hearing has been told how a social worker’s conduct was “totally unacceptable” while he was working in Rotherham.

John Maude, employed by Rotherham Borough Council between April 2005 and January last year, faced a series of charges of professional incompetence when he appeared before the General Social Care Council in London yesterday.

Maude admitted charges that he failed to keep notes in many cases for which he was the allocated worker.

He denied leaving the youngest child with no protective plan, knowingly leaving the children in a 'highly dangerous' situation and failing to respond to referrals relating to the domestic violence in their home.

Maude further denied failing to make necessary safe conduct arrangements for the children to see their father, allowing them unsupervised contact with him against the advice of the psychologist and the independent reviewing officer and thereby leaving the children where they were at an unacceptable high risk of harm.

Brian Wood, who led the investigation into Maude's handling of the case involving one family, branded the social worker's conduct “completely unacceptable.”

The tribunal heard that Maude had failed to act on police reports, a psychologist’s assessment of the father or an independent case review, all of which raised concerns about the dangers the children faced.
