Rotherham nurse braves headshave

A Rotherham cancer nurse is shaving her head to raise vital funds for cancer charities.

Ruth Quail (38), from Wickersley is undergoing the head shave in aid of Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity and for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

The mum of two is donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment.

The fundraising event, which will include a raffle, will take place on Saturday, December 7, at The Three Horseshoes Pub, Wickersley, from 5pm onwards.

The head shave is scheduled for 5.30pm.

Ruth, who currently works as a staff nurse on O1 ward at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital helping oncology and haematology patients, was spurred on to the challenge by the experiences of patients at work and closer to home.

She said: “I’ve worked at the Weston Park Hospital for 12 years, and I've been considering a charity fundraiser for a while.

“But in the last few months one of my close friends has been diagnosed with lymphoma and another was treated for testicular cancer.

“I felt like I wanted to do something that would raise awareness for these charities that do a great deal for cancer research.

“And my hair from the shave will go to a good home, too.!
