Revamp of Maltby "eyesore" to bring jobs boost

WORK has begun to redevelop an “eyesore” site in Maltby in the hope of creating up to 200 jobs.

Demolition crews have moved onto the former Lantern Engineering site, just off Hamilton Road, which will be replaced with an Aldi supermarket.

Councillors also approved an application by Quora Developments to build a Home Bargains store on the neighbouring former council depot at a planning board meeting on Friday.

Cllr Richard Price, of Maltby Town Council, said: “These projects will totally regenerate the area because not only has it become an eyesore, there has been some anti-social behaviour on there as well.

“There are still people out-of-work from when the pit closed in 2012 and just on this site we are looking at around 200 jobs which is fantastic.”

Cllr Price said demolition workers moved onto the site on Monday and have already begun work.

He said: “The site has been quite off-putting for people coming into Maltby but now that people can see work being done it makes a real difference.

“Home Bargains have also expressed an interest in starting work as soon as possible which is very positive.”

Councillors in Maltby are also working towards regenerating the town centre around High Street.

Cllr Janet Law said: “We want to regenerate the town because it is much needed. At the moment High Street is all charity shops and takeaways.

“We want to bring some new shops and businesses to the town so that we can keep business local.

“The problem we’ve got is that people have to go to Parkgate or Meadowhall for basic items such as a pair of shoes.

“It’s also a 45-minute bus ride into Rotherham so this will allow people in the town to shop locally.”
