LIBERAL Democrat candidate Nick Love has been on a fact-finding tour with a South Yorkshire Police Safer Neighbourhood team.

LIBERAL Democrat candidate Nick Love has been on a fact-finding tour with a South Yorkshire Safer Neighbourhood team.

Mr Love, who is standing in the Wentworth and Dearne constituency,spent several hours with the team to find out first-hand about the challenges they face.

He said that the overriding message was that funding for additional police on the beat would be the most effective way of tackling crime.

"A key policy of the Lib Dems is to fund another 3,000 police on the beat to make a real difference within communities" he said.

"When police are at the heart of the community it has two key effects.

“It deters crime from happening in the first place and allows them to build up relationships and trust that are invaluable in gathering intelligence when tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.

“I personally can't see why the current government can't see this.

“The use of technology to cut down on bureaucracy that keeps police from their community is also something that we see as vital to future effective policing. “These people do an invaluable job in keeping us safe and taking pride in following a case through to its conclusion which gives them real job satisfaction. “

We need to give them the tools to do the job and everyone benefits from the outcome.”
