Thief breaks into town hall using ladders and leaves trail of damage

The thief targeted Maltby's Edward Dunn Memorial Hall

A BREAK-IN at a council’s HQ left a council with hundreds of pounds in damages — and a burglar with nothing to show for it.

The Edward Dunn Memorial Hall, on Tickhill Road in Maltby, was reportedly targeted around 1.20am on December 21 by a man using ladders.

Maltby Town Council chair Chris McMahon said the thief had smashed one of the hall’s windows to get in.

Cllr McMahon told fellow councillors at a meeting last Thursday that the break-had been  noticed at 6.09am last Tuesday.

“As you may have seen, one of our windows was boarded up after a man wearing a hoodie and face covering broke into the building,” he said.

“The burglar managed to rip the alarm from the wall and he tried to get into the office unsuccessfully.

“We believe he did not manage to take anything from us.

“South Yorkshire Police came and are using the CCTV we provided them.

“This has left us with damage to our phone lines and broadband which has left us waiting to see if the insurance covers it.

“We will need to have a new alarm fitted along with new phone lines installed which could cost hundreds of pounds.”
