Police to crack down on uninsured drivers

POLICE in Rotherham will crack down on uninsured drivers this week.

The action is part of Operation Drive — a national campaign by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) to highlight the dangers of driving without insurance.

Officers will patrol and stop cars across South Yorkshire to speak to drivers and inspect their insurance documents.

South Yorkshire has seen 23 road deaths in 2016 so far — MIB figures show that uninsured drivers are four times more likely to have a fatal crash.

PC Sophie Bradey said: “Those who drive without insurance pose not only a risk to themselves but other drivers.

“This work is crucial as those that create potentially life-threatening risks will be identified and punished for their actions.

“South Yorkshire Police are committed to keeping roads safe and will take all action necessary to achieve this.”

Uninsured drivers can be reported to police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
