Police search River Don in Rotherham

UNDER water search teams have been called to the River Don after police received reports of a suspicious item in the water.

Police officers received a call at 10.50am today from a member of the public reporting the suspicious item in the river behind the Saul and Jackson car showroom off Marsh Street on the outskirts of the town centre.

A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said that it was too early to confirm what had been found in the water.

She added: “At this stage officers are currently in the process of recovering an item from the river for tests and can reassure members of the public that the item is not dangerous.

"As this is an on-going incident, further details will be made available later today."
