Supt Martin Scothern said: "The South Yorkshire Police and partners' World Cup Operation is designed to minimise the impact of unsocial behaviour and excessive drinking.

“I would like to reassure the public that we will do our utmost to create a safe environment in which to enjoy the football and that includes taking action against those who are violent either in pubs, on the street or in the home.

“We do hope that the England Team is successful, but also that people enjoy the World Cup safely."
