A CONCERNED member of the public claims up to six vans with Romanian number plates are parking up on a “quiet” residential estate for days at a time and “upsetting residents”.

Commenting on the issue affecting Thornham Meadows estate, the person said: “These six vans are parking up and the drivers are sleeping in them (overnight) for up to three days on a quiet estate near Goldthorpe.

“They are registered as 'RO' (Romanian) foreign plates and are blocking pedestrian access and upsetting a few residents.

“I am not sure this is legal. I asked police who said there is nothing they can do.”

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police confirmed it was not a police matter, but an issue for Barnsley Council's parking department.

A spokesperson for Barnsley Council said: “We’ve been made aware of the parking issue raised by residents, and our Safer Communities Neighbourhood Wardens will visit the area to further establish the situation.

“For parking enforcement, we can only take action when vehicles are parked on a road, pavement or verge where there are parking restrictions or yellow lines, or alongside a kerb that's been lowered for a pedestrian crossing.”
