AN AWARD-WINNING artist has created a festive “fairyland after dark” scene for her latest charity Christmas card – including a personal touch to her beloved pet.

Margaret Ellis' latest watercolour design – her ninth in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice's exclusive Christmas card range – shows the main street of the Derbyshire village of Castleton, and joins the Peace Gardens, Chatsworth house and the Botanical Gardens as other local landmarks depicted by the artist.

The Sheffield artist said: “I enjoy painting views of Castleton as it’s a very attractive village.

“It is especially beautiful at Christmas when the main street through the village looks like a fairyland after dark.”

The painting has special significance for Margaret as she has dedicated it to her late cat Billy.

“I felt that the bottom right corner looked a bit empty and needed something small there,” she said. “My own cat Billy was in the studio with me at the time which gave me the idea to fill the space with a cat.

“Sadly Billy died a week later.

“I was heartbroken but for me this painting is now very special because it is in memory of my cat Billy.”

She added: “I am delighted to help Bluebell Wood for the ninth year running and I hope to make it ten.

“It’s a real pleasure working with such a vital charity, and the fact that my work helps to raise funds makes it even more worthwhile.”

Heidi Hawkins, CEO of Bluebell wood, said: “Margaret’s stunning and timeless paintings are always firm favourites among our supporters, and we are honoured to have this exclusive design with such a special dedication to her cat Billy.
