Owners finally pull plug on 'unviable' Maltby pit

ROTHERHAM’S last remaining pit, employing 540 miners will close, its owners have confirmed.

Hargreaves Services said Maltby Colliery was no longer viable on safety, geological and financial grounds after producing coal for more than 100 years.

Last month, the company set up a working group of sto look into alternatives to shutting the mine.

The company said no “viable alternative solution” had been found and the colliery will be officially  “mothballed”.

The pit will shut by the end of March 2013.
