Nominate your favourite Rotherham building

ROTHERHAM Civic Society is calling on proud Rotherham folk to nominate their favourite buildings.

The society, which keeps an eye on the town’s heritage, is planning to draw up a list of architectural landmarks to add to the existing roll call of Listed buildings.

Secretary Peter Hawkridge explained: “We are keen to produce a Local List of buildings which are important to people living in Rotherham.

“At present there are 566 buildings and features in the borough which are Listed and therefore protected.

“But a lot of buildings, whilst not being nationally important, are part of what gives Rotherham people a sense of place.

“We want to create a Local List of these buildings and reach an agreement with the local authority that there will be proper consultation if changes are proposed.

“A recent example would be Doncaster Gate Hospital (pictured).”

The hospital was the subject of a campaign to keep it from being bulldozed but was later demolished and its site is due to become a new college campus.

The society is currently in the process of photographing the 566 Listed buildings and features but would like readers to nominate their own favourites for inclusion on the new list.
