New shopping centre plan for Parkgate

TALKS are under way about opening a new retail and leisure park in Parkgate.

Leeds-based Gregory Projects and Parkgate recycling firm Ron Hull Jnr Ltd want to turn the former Dixons car showroom site on Great Eastern Way into a 54,000 sq ft development with a discount food store, “non-food retail” and leisure facilities.

The car showroom was demolished last year and the site has been vacant since.

A planning application is expected to be submitted by May or June and work could start on the scheme later this year.

Richard Tovey, Director at Gregory Projects said: “Parkgate is already considered to be one of the region's premier retail destinations and the district centre plays a vital local role, so it is a real coup for us to secure this superb development opportunity.

“The existing provision does not allow for budget operators, which is where we hope to fill the gap, ultimately providing a greater variety of shopping.

“We are in discussions with potential operators which is very encouraging.”
