New hydro scheme opens on River Don

YORKSHIRE’S largest hydroelectric power plant opened today - in Kilnhurst.

MP John Healey carried out the official opening and started the £2.1 million scheme.

The project is at Thrybergh Weir in Kilnhurst and has been developed by Barn Energy and Yorkshire Hydropower and will provide electricity for the next 100 years to 300 homes.

There is also a built-in fish pass which will allow salmon, trout and eels to travel further upstream as far as Sheffield.
